Oral Surgery

Oral Maxillofacial surgery is a branch of dentistry that deals with surgical procedures of the hard and soft tissues of the head and neck, including the mouth and tooth structures. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dentists specializing in surgery of the mouth, face and jaws.

After four years of postgraduate dental education, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon completes four or more years of intensive, postdoctoral, hospital-based surgical residency training. Oral and maxillofacial surgery residents spend significant time rotating through related medical fields such as internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and emergency medicine. Depending on the residency program, some surgeons may also opt to complete the necessary requirements to earn a medical or another advanced degree. Some may also subsequently complete fellowships in sub-specialty areas.

Maxillofacial surgeons are trained in seeking harmony between facial appearance and function and have extensive education and training in surgical procedures involving both the soft tissue (skin and muscle) and hard tissue (bone and cartilage) of the maxillofacial area.

Oral and Maxillofacial pathology is a dental specialty that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. This includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical, or other examinations.

About maxillofacial prosthodontics

Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a field of dentistry that helps rehabilitate patients with acquired and congenital defects of the head and neck. These range from minor to major functional disabilities, with or without cosmetic disfigurement.

The maxillofacial prosthodontist may work with other specialists, including plastic, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiotherapists, chemotherapy specialists, head and neck surgeons, neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists, as well as dentists (pediatric dentists, orthodontists and periodontists), social workers and other health professionals.

About maxillofacial cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic maxillofacial surgery is used to reverse or repair physical problems stemming from disease, injury, burns, birth defects or aging. In many cases, cosmetic maxillofacial surgery helps restore normal function and improve individual appearance.

Cosmetic maxillofacial surgery uses a variety of techniques and several procedures to correct specific conditions. Cosmetic maxillofacial surgery can often be performed on an outpatient basis in an office, or a surgical facility, surgery center, or hospital, depending on your condition and preferences. Surgery may be performed under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or local anesthesia.
